"What are you doing here?": man asks wife at brothel |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 1:05 PM - by Digital Dave
|
LOL... yea, I would have to say this would be an "eye-opener" for me also. Wow... now this is a bad day.
A Polish man got the shock of his life when he visited a brothel and spotted his wife among the establishment's employees.
Polish tabloid Super Express said the woman had been making some extra money on the side while telling her husband she worked at a store in a nearby town.

New Malware Targets Windows 7, Vista SP1 and XP SP3 Vulnerability |
|
Jan 05, 2009 - 9:01 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Let's start the week off with some GOOD news. Okay... maybe not.
Worm:Win32/Conficker.B is a new piece of malware targeting a vulnerability in Server Service affecting all supporter versions of Windows, including Windows 7, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows XP SP3. Microsoft published details related to the new malicious code designed to exploit the MS08-067 Critical vulnerability reported in 2008, and patched with an out-of-band security update in October. Essentially, the software giant informed that Worm:Win32/Conficker.B was a variant of the Worm:Win32/Conficker malware, which was initially associated with attacks against MS08-067.
“We've seen another resurgence of Worm:Win32/Conficker, this time as Worm:Win32/Conficker.B. We've already received a number of reports of this new variant from the wild from affected users. Not surprisingly, a majority of the new infections we’re seeing are on machines that are yet to install the MS08-067 update. This new variant also spreads via network shares by attempting to log in to machines using a list of weak, common, and predictable passwords. Make sure you install those patches guys and keep your anti-Virus solution up to date,” Matt McCormack, MMPC Melbourne, revealed.

Microsoft earned $1.5B from "Vista Capable" PCs |
|
Jan 04, 2009 - 10:33 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Hmmm... not bad.
An expert estimates Microsoft earned more than $1.5 billion through the sale of PCs labeled as "Vista Capable," according to a court document.
Microsoft allowed PC makers to label some XP-running PCs as "Vista Capable" prior to the release of the Vista operating system in early 2007.
The "Vista Capable" moniker has come under attack in a class action lawsuit because some PCs labeled as "Vista Capable" could only run the most basic version of the operating system. Plaintiffs argue that Microsoft "unjustly enriched" itself because the company artificially inflated demand for computers that could only run the most basic version of Vista.

At Home with HomeGroup in Windows 7 |
|
Jan 03, 2009 - 11:03 AM - by Digital Dave
|
This is a cool new feature in Windows 7.
Like many places we’ve spent the past few weeks under quite a bit of snow, which is pretty unusual for Seattle! Most of us on the team took advantage of the snow time to install test builds of Windows 7 on our home machines as we finalize the beta for early 2009—I know I felt like I installed it on 7000 different machines. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing folks kick the tires on the beta when it is available. For more information on the beta, please stay tuned to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7 which is where we will post information about participation.
This post is about a Windows 7 feature that covers a lot of territory—it is about networking, user interface, sharing, media, printing, storage, search, and more. HomeGroup is a way of bringing all these features together in a way that makes it possible for a new level of coolness in a home with multiple PCs running Windows 7. A lot of us are the sysadmins for our own homes and for many others (friends and family). We set up network topologies, configure machines, and set things up so they work—HomeGroup is designed to make that easier so it can be done without a volunteer sysadmin. It makes for some challenges in how to describe the feature since the lack of such a feature has each of us creating our own private best practices or our own techniques for creating and maintaining a home network. HomeGroup is about making this easier (or possible for everyone else) and at the same time giving you the tools to customize and manage—and no matter what, under the hood the file and printer sharing, media sharing, and networking you are already familiar with is there should you wish to stick with the familiar ways. HomeGroup is a deep feature that builds on a lot of new infrastructure/plumbing new to Windows 7, though in this post we’ll talk about it from the experience of setting up a network.
This is a feature that is one you should just use and see it working, rather than trying to read about it as it covers so much territory in writing.
This post is by Jerry Koh a lead program manager in the Core User Experience team, with help from a number of folks across the dev team. --Steven
PS: From all of us on the Windows team, we wish you a very Happy New Year!

Windows 7 Stomps XP and Vista SP1 |
|
Jan 03, 2009 - 11:01 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Yea, but what about Vista SP2?
How does Windows 7 beta 1 compare to Vista and XP in terms of performance? That’s a question that’s been hitting my inbox regularly over the past few weeks. Let’s see if we can’t answer it!
Rather than publish a series of benchmark results for the three operating systems (something which Microsoft frowns upon for beta builds, not to mention the fact that the final numbers only really matter for the release candidate and RTM builds), I’ve decided to put Windows 7, Vista and XP head-to-head in a series of real-world tests to find out which OS comes out top.

If you love Windows XP, you’ll hate Windows 7 |
|
Jan 02, 2009 - 10:03 AM - by Digital Dave
|
These guys are on a roll.
My colleague Jason Perlow has been playing with Windows 7, and he hates it. The sad thing is, all the things he hates are improvements, in my opinion, which just goes to show that you really can’t please everyone. But what’s sad to see is that every setting Jason describes as broken is in fact easily customizable so it works the way he wants it.

Windows 7: Mojave My Ass |
Jan 02, 2009 - 10:01 AM - by Digital Dave
|
And it starts...
I’ve been playing with the Windows 7 Build 7000 (Beta 1) for several days now, and I’ve come to the conclusion that like Vista, it’s not a major improvement over what most users are currently experiencing with Windows XP, and is at best only a slight improvement over Vista SP1. In a number of cases, I think they’ve gone even further down the user rejection hole.
While I agree with fellow columnist Adrian Kingsley-Hughes that the Beta 1 release is relatively stable, and they’ve done a number of things to improve performance (although on more powerful systems these changes are less noticeable) and have alleviated some issues which have caused much frustration with Vista (such as the default UAC behavior) I find that Microsoft has introduced a number of changes that will frustrate many users.

30GB Zunes Failing Everywhere, All At Once |
|
Dec 31, 2008 - 10:03 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Oh this can't be good.
Right, so this is a weird one: we're getting tons of reports—tons—about failing Zune 30s. Apparently, the players began freezing at about midnight last night, becoming totally unresponsive and practically useless.
The crisis has been dubbed by Zune users 'Z2K9', due to the apparently synchronized faceplantings across the country. According to tipster Michael, the Zune users experienced something like this:
Apparently, around 2:00 AM today, the Zune models either reset, or were already off. Upon when turning on, the thing loads up and... freezes with a full loading bar (as pictured above). I thought my brother was the only one with it, but then it happened to my Zune. Then I checked out the forums and it seems everyone with a 30GB HDD model has had this happen to them
This report is consistently corroborated by literally hundreds of others across the various Zune support and fan forums.

Bootleg Windows 7 Is Not Updatable |
|
Dec 31, 2008 - 8:39 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Now this ought to halt a few downloads.
The first beta of Windows 7 is out - illegally on BitTorrent.
Cool, right? You can get a copy and run it before you're supposed to. But that might be a mistake, especially if you're not careful. Turns out that it's impossible to apply security updates to the bootleg version, including the recent "out of band" update for a seriously critical vulnerability in Internet Explorer.

Nvidia recommends not buying its defective chips |
|
Dec 31, 2008 - 8:22 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Well okay then I won't.
It Looks Like Nvidia finally has a solution to the defective chips fiasco that it keeps covering up. The short story according to documents seen by VR-Zone is to not buy them, just buy the newer ones.
No, really, we're not kidding. To quote some of the latest memo, ".....NVIDIA strongly recommends that customers transition to this latest revision of the NB8E-SET GPUs as soon as possible. These latest revision units utilize "Hitachi" underfill packaging material that improves product quality and enhances operating life by improved thermal cycling reliability." We know what you are thinking, there is no problem with the chips, they said so. Many times. With a straight face.

Downloads of pirated Windows 7 beta candidate soar |
|
Dec 31, 2008 - 7:46 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Unbelievable...
Searches today on the Pirate Bay BitTorrent site, for example, returned multiple listings of Windows 7 Build 7000, which Microsoft identifies as a beta candidate in the file name. The torrent is a disk image of the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate; a 64-bit version is not yet available.
The most heavily trafficked Windows 7 BitTorrent on Pirate Bay showed more than 4,300 "seeders" — the term for a computer that has a complete copy of the torrent file — and about 7,500 "leechers," or computers that have downloaded only part of the complete torrent. Less popular BitTorrents of the file on Pirate Bay claimed an additional 1,000 seeders and more than 3,000 leechers.

Microsoft denies the severity of a Media Player exploit |
|
Dec 31, 2008 - 7:41 AM - by Digital Dave
|
I still think it will get a patch.
The proof of concept for a Windows Media Player exploit does exist, and it has been shared. But it's not a vulnerability, Microsoft said, because it would need to trigger remote code execution...and this one doesn't.
Coder Laurent Jaffié recently posted to some "security" sites (at least one of which clearly deserves the prefix "in-") a Perl script that literally does nothing more than create a malformed .WAV file. If you play that WAV file in Windows Media Player, well, it evidently crashes. And Jaffié's description of the file in his comments actually does not claim to do more than that -- specifically, he calls it a "remote integrer [sic] overflow."

AnyDVD claims it defeats protection on latest BD+ discs |
|
Dec 31, 2008 - 7:40 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Hmmm... now the real question: Does it really work?
With its usual ostentatiousness, the makers of the media disc backup program AnyDVD HD released a new version that it claims decrypts "all commercial Blu-ray releases," including those which feature the latest BD+ copy protection.
Flying the flag of Antigua as if to shout to the world's content producers, "So sue us!" AnyDVD HD maker SlySoft released today version 6.5.0.2, with the promise of decrypting "all commercial Blu-ray releases," using a system SlySoft described as "incredible magic." The program makes backup copies of Blu-ray discs, among others, without the need for users to save .ISO images of those discs to HDD first, and without the need for HDCP-compliant monitors.

Researchers Devise Undetectable Phishing Attack |
|
Dec 30, 2008 - 11:50 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Great... just great.
With the help of about 200 Sony PlayStations, an international team of security researchers have devised a way to undermine the algorithms used to protect secure Web sites and launch a nearly undetectable phishing attack.
To do this, they've exploited a bug in the digital certificates used by Web sites to prove that they are who they claim to be. By taking advantage of known flaws in the MD5 hashing algorithm used to create some of these certificates, the researchers were able to hack Verisign's RapidSSL.com certificate authority and create fake digital certificates for any Web site on the Internet.

Windows 7 beta 1 review |
|
Dec 29, 2008 - 7:46 AM - by Digital Dave

It never ceases to amaze me how reporters and torrent users always seem to get the product before the official beta testers do. Amazing!
I’ve now had my hands on Windows 7 beta 1 build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400 (the build that is widely expected to be made available to beta testers by Microsoft early in January) and have had some time to compose my thoughts and feelings about this latest release.

And so it ends: AT&T users report network outages amidst Wal-Mart’s iPhone 3G launch |

Dec 29, 2008 - 7:45 AM - by Digital Dave

So that's what was going on. I had to switch mine to 2G yesterday.
Oops. Murphy’s Law may be in full swing today for the country’s largest GSM carrier at the worst-possible time - iPhone 3G / Wal-Mart launch day. We’ve yet to have any issues in the New York area but emails are hitting us en masse from AT&T customers reporting network outages across the east coast and beyond. Most reports recount difficulties with connecting via AT&T’s 3G network but some go further to detail voicemail difficulties, BlackBerry service outages and even complete network outages spanning hours at a time.

Apple - Snow Leopard Screenshots Show Little New |
|
Dec 29, 2008 - 7:42 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Hmmm... lots of "under the hood" fixes seem to be the theme for next years software releases.
Over the holiday weekend, some screenshots and video of the developer release of Snow Leopard were posted to a German site.
Overall, the images show little new from the WWDC build originally released back in July, but may be of interest to some readers. By its nature, Snow Leopard will have little in the way of visual changes and most of the improvements are said to be "under the hood". New Apple technologies such as Grand Central and Open CL will allow developers to easily tap into multi-core CPUs and GPUs that reside in most Macs.

Dave Lists His First Item on EBAY |
|
Dec 26, 2008 - 11:54 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Morning all,
So... one of the things those of us who work in the IT field have a tendency to do is buy stuff for our girlfriends and wives that they... well, like but let us know pretty much right away we sorta "over-shot" the gift and I this holiday season have done just that.
My wife has been "advising" me she needed a new phone so I thought this holiday season I would get her one.
I decided on an un-locked Motorola A1200 (Red to be exact). I researched it like crazy and thought it was similar to her old phone style wise (which she liked a lot) but it had all these COOL functions (I was truly impressed).
Anyway my wife, ya know.. being nice and all, fired the phone up and played with it for about an hour and then advised me, in a nice way, I had missed the mark on that particular gift this year (9 gifts from me and she like 8 out of 9... I'm calling that a successful year) and that she needed something "simpler".
So... since my kids are all on Verizon they can't use the phone. My wife jumped on-line and bought something "simpler" that she wanted so I decided to sell it on EBAY (seriously, when am I going to learn to stick with the basics: jewelry, perfume, and Macy gift cards.)
It truly was used for about an hour and it worked great (I think I played with it more than she did) and I just wanted to let you all know this will come from me and not some random dealer. The phone has a Linux based OS and while some might be turned of my that I have to say it was very quick moving through the interface and the options were damn near endless.
If you could spread the word to folks who you think might need a really good phone that would be great.

Coolest Utility Of The Year? |
|
Dec 24, 2008 - 3:43 PM - by Digital Dave
|
Keith sent this my way this morning mentioning I should start to track this application for the site. I had never heard of this application and before I recommend anything I like to try it myself.
Now, I pride myself on how well I **thought** I kept all my applications up to date and I was amazed at home many of the small little apps like Adobe Shockwave and Suns Java were out of date. It's small and works very well.
Here is what Keith had to say about it:
"I am particularly impressed that they use authors PAD files to track their updates and the fact that when you click on the download links you are taken to the author's official web site, not a third party software archive. This program tracks many programs not covered by the FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Notifier is a small utility that scans your computer for installed software and displays a list of updates. Also you can see the latest updates for applications from your Watch List."

LameXP 3.07 Xmas Edition |

Dec 24, 2008 - 11:36 AM - by Digital Dave
|
This is, in my opinion, one of the best mp3-encoder's their is.
LAME mp3-encoder was designed as an open-source application for many years and now it's the best mp3-encoder ever!
LAME gives you the best possible quality/compression, provides lots of function and works very fast. The original LAME mp3-encoder is aviable from the official homepage (www.mp3dev.org), but it's only aviable as a console-application. Such console-applications are very flexible, but most users prefer to work with GUI (graphical user interface) applications.
